What makes CNC machines and machine tools different
Machine tools are dense rather than large, which is what makes them deceptive: a crate the size of a wardrobe can weigh six tonnes and exceed the floor loading of a typical light-industrial unit. They are also precision equipment, so shock and vibration during transit have consequences that only show up during commissioning, long after the freight was signed for as delivered.
Handling and packing considerations
These are the points that decide whether CNC machines and machine tools arrives in a usable condition rather than merely arriving.
- Density is the trap. Confirm gross weight before assuming any handling method.
- Fit shock and tilt indicators for high-precision machines — they turn a dispute into a fact.
- Machines are usually bolted to a skid or pallet at origin; confirm the fixings are rated for the weight.
- Ways, spindles, and moving assemblies should be locked or supported for transit by the manufacturer.
- Rust prevention matters on a long sea passage: VCI wrapping and desiccant inside the crate.
- Plan the rigging into position, not just the delivery to the door.
Permits, controls, and the regulatory position
Machine tools are generally not controlled goods in Singapore, but certain high-precision or multi-axis machining equipment can fall under export control regimes in the country of origin — particularly from the United States, Japan, and the EU. That is an origin-side clearance your supplier must resolve, and it holds shipments regularly.

Do I need an export licence for a CNC machine?
Sometimes. Multi-axis and high-precision machining centres can fall under export control lists in the US, EU, and Japan. Your supplier is responsible for obtaining any licence, but the delay lands on your timeline — so ask about it before you place the order, not after.
How do I know if the machine was damaged in transit?
Fit shock and tilt indicators before shipment and photograph them on arrival before unpacking. Without them, a precision fault discovered at commissioning is very difficult to attribute. They cost almost nothing relative to the machine.
My workshop floor is a standard industrial slab. Is that enough?
Often, but check. A six-tonne machine on a small footprint produces high point loading. Get the machine's footprint and weight distribution from the manufacturer and confirm against your building's specification before delivery is scheduled.
