What makes marble and natural stone different

Stone is the one category where the container fills up by weight long before it fills up by space, and that single fact governs the whole shipment. A 20-foot container reaches its payload limit with a fraction of its volume used. The second governing fact is that slabs break when bracing is inadequate, and a broken slab from a specific block cannot be replaced with a matching one.

Handling and packing considerations

These are the points that decide whether marble and natural stone arrives in a usable condition rather than merely arriving.

  • Plan by tonnage first. Volume is almost never the binding constraint.
  • A-frames or bundles with proper strapping and edge protection are essential.
  • Slabs from the same block should be kept together and sequenced — matching veins cannot be replaced.
  • Confirm the destination can unload heavy bundles; this usually needs a forklift with adequate capacity.
  • Timber A-frames need to meet ISPM 15 wood packaging requirements.
  • Photograph loading at origin — it is the only evidence if bracing was inadequate.

Permits, controls, and the regulatory position

Natural stone is generally not a controlled good in Singapore. The main compliance points are accurate declaration, wood packaging compliance for the frames, and — for very heavy consignments — road transport weight limits on the Singapore leg. Confirm axle and gross vehicle weight limits before assuming a single delivery is possible.

Questions we get asked about this

How many slabs fit in a container?

Fewer than the volume suggests — the payload limit binds first. Give us slab dimensions, thickness, and total tonnage and we will calculate the container requirement on weight, which is the number that actually matters.

How do I stop slabs cracking in transit?

Adequate A-frame bracing, edge protection, and strapping, plus photographs of the loaded container before the doors close. Most breakage traces back to loading, not to the sea passage.

Does vein matching survive shipping?

Only if the slabs are kept in block sequence and labelled. Tell your supplier explicitly that sequencing matters and have it recorded on the packing list — reconstructing the order afterwards from unlabelled slabs is close to impossible.
